Mag. Dr. Dr. Hanna Lucia Worliczek

Profile

Hanna Worliczek is a historian of the life sciences in the 20th century with an emphasis on modern cell biology and its intersections with other scientific disciplines. After finishing her diploma studies in biology (2005) she earned a doctorate in microbiology-genetics at the University of Vienna (2010) with a dissertation on the immune response to a protozoan infection in pigs. Between 2010 and 2014 she worked as a postdoc at the Institute of Parasitology (University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna), leading a junior research group investigating the immunological host-parasite interactions of apicomplexan parasites of veterinary relevance, and working on the development of in vitro models and cell biology of the apicomplexan life cycle. From 2014–2018 she had been a fellow in the FWF-doctoral program “The Sciences in Historical, Philosophical and Cultural Contexts” at the University of Vienna, and in 2019 a research associate in the interdisciplinary research program McDonnell Initiative @MBL at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole (MA) with a focus on cell biology’s visual culture and historical epistemology. In 2020, Hanna Worliczek earned a doctoral degree in history with her dissertation on immunofluorescence microscopy as a visual epistemic tool in modern cell biology. Since 2019, she has been an associate fellow at the Department of History, University of Vienna, funded by a research fellowship of the Gerda Henkel foundation. Within this framework, Hanna Worliczek is investigating valuation dynamics of different ways of knowing in cell biology after 1950, with an emphasis on tensions between descriptive and experimental-interventional research practices. Starting in 2011, she taught various aspects of parasitology as well as good scientific practice (University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna) as well as courses on scientific literacy for medical students (skills line public health & evidence-based medicine, Sigmund Freud University Vienna). Hanna Worliczek currently teaches history of science at the University of Vienna.

As a visiting scholar in the GMPG Research Program, she studies the history of cell biological research in the Max Planck Society (ca. 1970–1990) in comparison to other research institutions in the context of an increasing specialization and molecularization of cell biology’s research fields since the 1970s.
